There are many things that are detrimental to our health, but if I had to choose one thing that is a problem for so many people, its sugar cravings. Complications from sugar kill more people than cigarette smoke. Yes, you read that correctly. People think it’s the opposite, but it is not. Sugar affects every organ in your body, and not in a good way. If you have a sugar addiction, then you must do something now in order to avoid serious health complications in the future. In this post, I will give you tips on how to stop those cravings, but first things first.

How do you know if you have a sugar addiction? Here are some clues:

1) Do you eat high sugar foods such as sugary sweets, white bread or pasta every day?

2) Do you feel tired and irritable in the morning and again mid-afternoon, but find it’s immediately relieved when you eat something sweet?

3) Do you ever feel out of control when eating sweet foods and find that once you start eating it’s hard to stop?

4) Do you end up with sweets in your shopping cart – even though you promised yourself that you wouldn’t buy any?

5) Does eating something sweets lift your mood when you’re feeling down?

6) Have you ever tried and failed to limit the amount of sugary foods in your diet?

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, then chances are you have a sugar addiction.

The first step to fixing a sugar addiction is admitting that you have a problem. Sugar addiction is real, just like any other addiction because it essentially hijacks our mind. It has the same affect on our brain that cocaine and nicotine do. We become addicted to it and can’t control our consumption.

How do you stop sugar cravings? Here are some tips:
  • Boost your serotonin – Serotonin is the happiness hormone and can be raised through diet, exercise, and the right sleep schedule. When you have plenty of serotonin, you are less likely to have cravings for sweets.
  • Drink plenty of water – You might think that you are craving sugar when you are actually dehydrated. Grab a glass of water, throw in some lemon, and a packet of Stevia.
  • Eat plenty of greens – They are loaded with nutrition, give you plenty of energy, and ward off sugar cravings.
  • Eat more sea vegetables – Rich in vitamins and minerals, seaweed or sea vegetables make for a healthy snack! Sea vegetables have a high mineral content, while eating anything with sugar immediately depletes minerals from your body
  • Enjoy fermented foods and drinks – This is the best way that you can reduce sugar cravings. Foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and drinks like kefir are great for getting rid of those pesky sugar cravings.
  • Meditate – One more reason to meditate. Meditation reduces stress levels. Stress creates cortisol, which damages your blood sugar. This is a vicious cycle that damages your adrenals and creates sugar cravings.
